SEER Updates Happening in 2023
What you need to know about SEER changes coming in 2023
Psst…SEER means Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It’s a measurement used for how much electricity your AC system uses. Think of it like Miles Per Gallon (MPG) for your car. The higher the SEER, the less amount of energy it uses.
The Department of Energy (DOE) is raising the minimum SEER efficiency for central air conditioners and heat pumps beginning January 1, 2023.
For straight AC systems (powered by gas), the minimum efficiency will increase from 14 to 15 SEER in Texas. Fun fact, the minimum is only increasing from 13 to 14 SEER in the northern states because they’re not as hot as us…they’re jealous!
For heat pump systems (electric powered), the minimum efficiency is going from 14 to 15 SEER across the whole country. We think Elon is probably happy about this.
What does this mean for you? If you’re thinking of buying before the end of the year, might as well wait until 2023!
TLDR – As of the first day of 2023 you won’t be able to get a gas AC system or a heat pump (electric) system in Texas with a SEER rating lower than 15.
